On Location Portraits

Summertime is a great opportunity to go out to a local beach and shoot some on location portraits. People enjoy getting outside and having fun on the beach, and why not take some photos at the same time. You can have a portrait taken posed, with or without props, or just have some lifestyle photo journalistic photos taken while spending your time at the beach. Above the photo was taken using a white semi-translucent umbrella as a prop creating a soft light on our model at the same time.

Even in harsh sunlight conditions, there are techniques to help make a great portrait. We also take our studio mono lights out on location to help with those difficult lighting conditions.

©TrevorAwalt_48A3409Our model wanted to have some fun just walking around in the water at the edge of the ocean. We chose a local beach that typically does not have many people to have an unobstructed view of the ocean and beach in the background. The harsh sunlight provided some nice hair light and we also used our studio mono light to provide fill light for her face and upper body to bring her out of shadow.

Doing an on location portrait shoot requires a bit of planning and a little help from mother nature for the weather to cooperate. We also suggest taking a few portraits in our studio before going out on location. Safety is the foremost consideration doing any outdoor photo shoot which we take very seriously.

Summertime is a great time to consider having your portrait taken, it’s a time where family gets together while on vacation and a time to create those precious memories that will never be forgotten. As the years pass by we realize that family and our life memories are what is most important.

Contact us to book your next portrait session as the end of summer is drawing to a close. If the remaining part of your summer is too busy you can always always consider having your portrait taken with the beautiful fall colours.

June is “Prom” Month

2x2_48A0288-EditIn Nova Scotia near the end of June graduating Grade 12 students prepare for their Prom. In preparation the ladies have spent much time agonizing over which dress to rent or purchase in hopes it will be unique and also make arrangements for a hairdo and makeup for the day of the Prom. The gentlemen usually find themselves scrambling to pick up their rental suit and meet up with their beautiful date in time to join the photo session.

The first part of photographing the day is to meet up with your clients at their home to setup and take those important family photos before they are off to the meet and greet venue where the students will be mingling with their friends for possibly the last time as they go off to a secondary school/college, the first step to a life long career.

A bright sunny day with no clouds makes for harsh lighting conditions and you also would prefer a pleasing background for the photos. We had visited a few weeks prior to the photo shoot to get ideas where the individual and family photos would be taken. Between 1pm – 2:30pm, in late June, the sun is high in the sky and the family yard for the position of the sun would not have an ideal location to take the photos.

2x2_48A0172-EditThey did however have a car port and a brick wall which would be perfect for the images as the brick would represent the building blocks for their life journey ahead of them. With a brick background, although it is meaningful, it has a bit more of a masculine feel to the images. After the shoot looking at the images with the beautiful dress and suit we decided to do a bit of Photoshop work to change out the background to a few other colours using one of our textures and also enhance the in camera vignette.

Here are three sample images below, let us know which style or colour background you prefer.

We will be posting more images from this shoot in the days to come. Thanks for stopping by to visit. If you are looking for a family/individual portrait session or having an event give us a call we would be glad to help.

Blandford & Area Fire Rescue Annual Appreciation Night 2019

On May 4th the Blandford & Area Fire Rescue held their Annual Appreciation Night which we were invited to photograph the event. It was a great night recognizing the firefighters and first responders in our community with speeches, award presentations and great food. It was nice to see the many crew, dignitaries, presenters and life members. The speeches even included some humour and were heart felt by all.

During the award ceremonies we took photographs of the presenters and award recipients on a gray background which allows us a lot of flexibility in creating a complementary look to the final images.

In the first image you’ll see the initial result of the image taken on the plain gray background using one of our flash mono lights with a large octa soft box to create as much of a soft light as possible. Also, keeping the light high enough to eliminate the reflection in the glasses and on the awards.

With some computer work reveals the above two images, which show the gray on the left and the blue on the right. Choosing the blue background to complement the crew’s uniforms was an easy choice as it provides the image more of a comforting feeling.

We photographed some candid images at the beginning of the event as well as during the event. After the award ceremony we moved out to the Engine Room and took some photographs of the crew and life members with their newest fire engine attack trunk #431.
